Badman sounds amazing, it's terrible what happened to him...but yeah it's a reality. I've seen it happen before too. One time my dog Chela ate poison someone left out for the dogs and I had to have her stomach pumped at the vet after she started seizing.
And yeah, we can't take them all home, there truly aren't enough cheese buns. I'm glad you got to know Badman though. :)
What an amazing story about an amazing dog! Badman is EXACTLY the type of dog that we want memorialized (at the companion animal memorial site that I'm working to build). It's those sweet souls that are the hardest to take. I still miss my buddy Zeke, a funny bloodhound who I lost to lymphoma.
Yes, I'm only now coming public with it. I introduced the idea in this post https://katalbrecht.substack.com/p/help-build-a-pet-memorial-site-1 and talked about WHY we need a pet memorial site. Then I posted part 2 here https://katalbrecht.substack.com/p/help-build-a-pet-memorial-site-2 where I give more details of the vision. There has not been much response, but I expect that will change over time as I do more speaking and writing about it. I'm still in the "visioneering" stage but I encourage others interested in seeing a site like this to join my Substack and share ideas and give feedback.
A beautiful story Kristi. Heartfelt knowing that Badass had come back to the house when he was dying. He obviously knew that the house was his safe haven.
I have just watched a new release movie called Black Dog, a Chinese movie about stray dogs that have taken over a declining outback city in China. The dog is very ugly, the leader of a large pack and accused of spready rabies around the city. So city rangers are after him. The interaction with the lead character is facscinating. And in real life the actor adopts the lead dog at the conclusion of filming, true story! Might be one to watch one day.
You know what? I never thought about that at all until you just said it. Badman came back to the house to die πβ€οΈ That kind of lit up my heart a little.
And thanks for the movie recommendation. Will it make me cry?
Did you ever watch Arthur the King. Also based on a true story about a stray in the Dominican (I think). Beautiful and uplifting.
Thanks Tim. I desperately wanted to bring him home but A) I was travelling too much and B) I had a dog back home already. She lived with my mom when I lived in Jamaica.
One of my besties had the cutest little scrubby mutt named Freeway. Because thatβs where she found him - by the side of a freeway. Just FCK people who abandon dogs like that.
Oh wow, Kira, thank you for sharing this. I LOVE his name and I extra love that your friend found him and is giving him the life he deserves. I mirror your FCK sentiments π
Good, now I donβt have to carry these tears around all week.
Youβre reminding me of the pup named Brisket we rescued off the highway near Cuba, New Mexico. So named because thatβs how we got him in the backseat π€£ he ended up finding a home on a massive ranch in the mountains in Colorado. Sweet mongrel beast.
Max came to us as a $3 purchase at a garage sale. He was the product of a pedigreed long-hair miniature dachshund and a scottie. He ruled the house like he owned it, stealing food when he could. If my 3 sons started fighting, he would nip each one to stop it. He slept between my wife and I, with his back against me while pushing her away with his feet. I ran 2 miles with him every day. As soon as I put my shoes on he would start yelping and sprint for the door. We had him for 18 years and I still miss the little bastard.
OMG a garage sale dog? $3.00 !!?? That is so sad but also so good that you found him and gave him the best 18 years! I love badass dogs that claim their people and give us so many great moments to live for. Go Max!!
It's actually even worse. My wife was shopping garage sales for a bike for our youngest son. She saw the mother and fell in love with one of the pups, but wanted my approval so she didn't buy it. She came home in tears about how wonderful this dog was. I told her to go back and get it. Unfortunately her dream dog had been sold, but they had Max, who had been returned due to crying all night. So he was actually a garage sale reject. His whole story is here: https://substack.com/home/post/p-145510282
I'm sorry I giggled a little at "garage sale reject." It's NOT funny but the way you said it sounded a bit funny. I believe everything happens for a reason and he was meant to be yours. I'll go read your story now!
I had one of those dogs too. Not sure if you read a past story I wrote about my previous dog, Mojo. She was a runt and kind of a reject. Nobody wanted her except my 8 year old...and I'm SO glad we got her.
Beautiful and sad story but bless you for the love you gave him.
RIP, Badman! β₯οΈπ¦΄πΎ

Chela was lucky to have you. All I can think about is the pain and suffering a poisoned dog goes through before it finally slips away. Ugh.
Badman was such a bright spot in the world π
I knew where this story was going given your heart and love for dogs. Beautiful tribute.
Thank you Cindy. He was one of a kind, that's for sure. β€οΈ

That sounds like such a beautiful project. Have you written about it? If so, do you have a link to share?

I admire you for having such big visions for honoring pets. I'm off to read both posts now. Thank you for sharing!

Yes Black Dog will make you cry, but the ending is a little like Badman finding his last safe resting place.
Iβll check out Arthur the King.
A touching story with a better plot than most movies.
Maybe you couldn't bring him home, but you gave him a home anyway. He won the human lottery.
Thanks Tim. I desperately wanted to bring him home but A) I was travelling too much and B) I had a dog back home already. She lived with my mom when I lived in Jamaica.
Still wish I could save them all. π
Not enough cheese buns in the worldβ¦ π
I would SO adopt several dogs if our funds and property and hubby permitted.
What a sweetie. Thx for this story. π₯°π
Same here, CK. They're so deserving.
those back legs! he's got a corgi sploot!!!
Right!!!??? He was friggin ADORABLE!!! Itβs hard to believe that a total stray mongrel had such an endearing personality!

OMG I love his name! And super love that you rescued him. So, did you take him to a shelter for adoption or did you look for a new owner yourselves?
We found his person through the grapevine. Held off on taking him to the shelter as long as possible (even though they do great work!).

Here's that story of Mojo. https://dogsnobs.substack.com/p/when-dog-shopping-becomes-a-puppy-rescue-mission
Waaaaahhhh . . . but I'm glad Badman found you when he did.
Me too, Jan β€οΈ He wasn't the only dog I fell in love with there. I have one more story of a little dame and her puppies coming in the future.
It's so hard falling in love with strays.
