I love that supermutt is an actual option.

We thought maybe some Corgi in our very small dog but no, she’s a big dog in a little dog’s body.

32.9% Australian Cattle Dog

17.1% Siberian Husky

14.6% Chow Chow

12.9% Supermutt

12.2% American Pit Bull Terrier

6.6% German Shepherd Dog

3.7% Rottweiler

Wow that's so random. Do you ever question the accuracy of dog DNA tests based on what you have versus what they say you have?

I’ve wondered. But she’s a crazy combo so I’d probably accept whatever they told me.

Lol I hear you. And in the grand scheme, does it even matter beyond entertainment purposes?

Glitter Bomb! 💥😂 If I did my dog’s DNA, I’m sure it would be 53% cat. She is aloof, wants attention on HER terms, refuses to play fetch, stares at us, and interrupts me when I type (paws at my arm). And also, you should have answered with option two!!

OMG, that video . . . I'm pretty sure there's some Tasmanian Devil in there. As for our Nora, whom we've had for nine months now, I'm tempted to have her DNA tested. Or I could just go with my hunch that she's part Lab, part pit bull, and part Visigoth. Sweet, but a barbarian at heart.

Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

Tasmanian devil 😂😂 I feel like you already know Dezi because it's so accurate lol.

I think everyone should do the test just for pure entertainment purposes. I love the "barbarian" description too. I may have used that word a few times.

When I adopted my dog, the rescue said he was a golden doodle, which I took at face value because there was no paperwork. Then he grew to be considerably larger than the average doodle, and about every other day someone would ask me if he was part Irish wolfhound. So I too turned to Embark. It didn’t matter to me but I was definitely curious. Turns out he is in fact the doodle they said he was: exactly 50% golden retriever and 50% poodle.

Wow what a perfect even split. You know, I've seen some huge doodle breeds. There's one in my neighborhood that looks like a pony trotting along the sidewalk 😂 Although, he's black and white so I think he may be a sheepadoodle. Such interesting mixes out there.

There really are. We came across a mastiff doodle a couple weeks ago. He was a big, handsome fellow.

Kristi, I loved your story! Your "Super Mutt" is adorable too!

I have to say, I have definitely thought about getting my Zuchon, ( Shih Tzu / Bichon mix) Bella, DNA tested to see what breed(s) she really is. My husband bought her for me ( from a pet store) as a surprise birthday gift almost a year after my beloved 14 year old Llasa had to be put down. This Zuchon was advertised as a " Teddy Bear" dog, a designer breed that was popular about a decade ago. Bella was supposed to be a compact dog, no bigger than 10-13 lbs. with some resemblance to a teddy bear. Fast forward almost 13 years, to my 28 lb., long- legged, small headed Bella. If I didn't need all of my fingers, I definitely would've swabbed her mouth long before now!

Since reading about your experience with the DNA tests, I'm really tempted to chance it...

You should! I'm not sorry I did even just for the fun of it. I do still question whether these tests could actually be legit but it's so fun to find out. I was actually pretty proud that Dezi is the muttiest mutt ever tested 😂

Our UK rescue staffie, who is pretty slim and leggy and a total frisbee champ, turns out to have a bit of greyhound.

So, funny story. I got a DNA test kit for my dog as a present a long time ago, which I did. Years later my wife's friend across town got a dog and just happened to do a DNA test from the same company. Their results showed other dogs in the system nearby who are close relatives. Turns out their dog and my dog are cousins!

No way!!! That's super awesome! I always wished Dezi's close relatives had "contact" enabled so we could have reached out. Although, we did accidentally run into her biological sister from the same litter at the dog park a couple years ago. They look NOTHING alike! It was crazy.

I love that she’s mostly super mutt! And thank you for that video. Makai was 50% purebred golden retriever (we met his mom) and his DNA test said he had red bone coonhound and leonberger in him. We suspect the leonberger (they’re bred to look like lions) may have been a placeholder for “big dog.”

The foster people told us Casey was a lab/pug mix. The test says he hasn’t a jot of lab or pug. Mostly hound, with a little bulldog and Boston terrier. Almost everything the foster mom told us was wrong. The exception: “He’s perfect for you.”

Kristi Keller 🇨🇦's avatar

And that's what truly matters...they are perfect in all their muttery!

I wish I'd have known about these tests with my last dog. They said lab and boxer but she didn't look like either one.

I just love looking at all the dog park mutts and speculating. They're all so unique.
